My Research Process Narrative
When first given the research project, finding an international news topic seemed relatively easy considering there are so many countries on our planet, and so much to learn about in all of them. However, choosing one matter in a country was more difficult because there are so many interesting things going on all over the world. I decided to research about the secularization and removal of bishops and priests in Greece because I was already aware of how deeply religious the country is and that aspect fascinated me. Growing up in a very traditional catholic family, I know that my life is centered around my religion and same goes for the rest of my very large family. Since I can remember I could never directly come to my mother with a question or struggle, without her one and only answer being to forward the question to God. I was intrigued to learn about an entire country of people who feel the same way my family and I do about their values and religion which has been passed down for ages, and even more drawn to the topic when I found out the country was facing secularization.
After deciding on the topic, developing the question I would be answering in my essay, was a struggle. I knew the question would have to be something I could find enough information about and with this topic I was taking a risk on that, but luckily it paid off. When I finally began researching, I was surprised by how much information I was gathering and I kept digging deeper and deeper into the topic and religion of the country. The real struggle I faced during this process was narrowing my research and details of my paper after I found myself lost in all the information that interested me greatly about this topic. Because of the amount of information I encountered, my revised thesis ended up being something completely different from my original. Throughout this difficult process, I had many regrets about the question I submitted but the relief was so rewarding when I was finally able to string all the relevant details of the topic together and form a solution and conclusion to my essay.

New Developments:
Priests and bishops have already been removed as civil servants in Greece and their payroll is no longer obligations of the State government. This was decided upon in the agreement made by the Prime Minister and Archbishop and neither have moved on that decision. However, people of Greece and clerics of the church continue to participate inwalk-outs and strikes to oppose Tsipras' plan for a more secularized state. There have also been reports by members of the church who state that the new agreement is a rejection of historic consensus and ties between the government and Church. A statement was also released by The Holy Synod, saying they are to carry-on in discussions with the state over "issues of mutual interest." |
